Five people have been injured in an explosion at a downtown wharf in Auckland this morning.

The blast at the Hawkins construction site on Halsey Street is being blamed on a gas cooker but authorities have not confirmed the cause of the explosion.

Four of the injured have been left with serious injuries and have been taken to Middlemore Hospital and one suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Auckland City Hospital.

Shredded items of clothing can be seen on the road near the scene of the explosion.
